Our Footprint in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, South Africa’s energy hub, produces nearly 80% of the nation’s coal, fuelling numerous power stations and driving industrial growth. However, this dependency has made the province a significant greenhouse gas emitter, highlighting the urgent need for a just energy transition.

Recognizing the complexity of this transition, the Impact Catalyst is leading this shift, working with stakeholders like the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) to support a sustainable transition from coal dependency. Using a stakeholder engagement model in the Gert Sibande and Nkangala districts—both of which are critical coal-producing regions, this initiative aims to include workers and communities in the decision-making process.

In support of this transition, the Impact Catalyst is also developing a geospatial database to inform decision-making across the province. This database will help identify high-priority areas for renewable energy projects ,infrastructure development, and community engagement. By using data to guide its efforts, the Impact Catalyst ensures that decisions are made efficiently, effectively, and in ways that maximize socio-economic benefits for the people of Mpumalanga.

In recognition of the critical role Mpumalanga will play in South Africa’s Just Energy Transition (JET), the Impact Catalyst has secured funding from key partners for international JET initiatives. Additionally, collaborations with local industries like Sasol and potential agreements with Eskom will be key to aligning corporate interests with socio-economic and environmental goals.

While coal dominates, Mpumalanga has untapped potential in renewable energy, agriculture, and tourism. Therefore, the Impact Catalyst is working to diversify the economy and address challenges like infrastructure deficits and skills shortages. Through strong partnerships and strategic funding, the Impact Catalyst is ensuring Mpumalanga’s transition to a low-carbon future is just, inclusive, and sustainable, setting a model for development that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility.
